Priorities
I was working yesterday evening so missed this ever so ‘tragic’ news of Michael Jackson’s passing. Yes, he did have some good songs, but this hero worship is a complete nonsense.
It seems that many people are so obsessed with this sort of celebrity news that it’s pushed all other news off the agenda on Sky and the BBC are struggling to find time for other minor news such as violence on the streets of Iran and, oh yes, the death too of Farrah Fawcett which, on any other day would be a big story, just to be usurped by the death of a ‘greater’ icon.
It’s a statement of world priorities when you look at trending topics on Twitter and find that #iranelection has been overtaken by #michaeljackson. Why, I ask is the death of a pop star more important than a country falling apart which is on the brink of developing nuclear weapons which it may have intentions of using against it’s enemies?
If anyone can answer this question then send your answers on a post card.
Now we wait for Gordon Brown’s statement on the matter (just to show how ‘in touch’ he is with the people)
UPDATE: This is now a complete farce. My local newspaper, which has nothing to do with Michael Jackson at all has open a book of condolence! pathetic. Why are there so many stupid people out there?
UPDATE: I have had a fair bit of feedback on this article, mostly negative. Many readers feel I am being a bit too harsh on Jackson. That was not my intention. The purpose of the article was to highlight our rediculous priorities. Ignoring his personal problems, Jackson was a great musician who made many great songs that will live on for ever. Indeed, I find to my own suprise that I have over 7 hours of Jackson’s music on my computer!
